Conference on Immigration, Youth and Identity in a Time of Current Transformations

The network raised the issue of youth migration and identity in the Arab world, through the Social Changes Unit, its international conference under the title “Youth, Identity and Migration in a Time of Current Transformations,” in partnership with the Faculty of Economic and Legal Sciences at the Modern University of Nouakchott, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). ), the Mauritanian Center for Legal, Economic and Social Studies and Research and the German Hans Seidel Foundation, in cooperation with other Arab and international scientific institutions on June 27/28/29, 2022 at the Faculty of Economic and Legal Sciences at the Modern University of Nouakchott and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Mauritania

The conference started from the questions of the opening lecture presented by the network’s president, Dr. Marise Younes, under the title “Cognitive Questions on Youth, Immigration, and Identity Issues,” which focused on the factors that expel young people from their country of origin and the extent of their connection to the transformations of the “Arab Spring,” and on how to deal with the issue of immigration as an existing reality. As well as the effects of conflict experienced by migrant youth in host countries. Over three days, the conference witnessed seven scientific sessions, in which more than 50 male and female researchers from Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mauritania, Jordan, Sudan, Turkey, and Morocco participated. In his scientific sessions, he addressed current knowledge on migration issues based on multidisciplinary approaches. He also focused on the responsibility of the colonial powers in consolidating the phenomenon of immigration in Arab countries.The researchers focused on global economic challenges and their impact on the issues of immigration and youth. On its last day, the conference included deliberative workshops with students and activists from civil society, which sparked an interactive discussion between researchers and students and concluded with many recommendations, most notably the necessity of approaching the problem of migration based on a multidisciplinary approach in which researchers from various fields of knowledge, especially the humanities and social sciences, participate. It also requires that the study be conducted from the actors themselves, i.e. the youth. It concluded that Arab governments must rely on participatory policies in their approach to immigration issues. Establishing research centers concerned with immigration, while investing in the outcomes of the research and seminars of those centers in order to come up with a unified vision on immigration issues based on investing in young people in the countries of origin, instead of exporting them abroad.
